Fireside Chat: Beyond Incremental Improvement: Reimagining How We Recruit and Run Clinical Trials
Wed, Oct 14, 2026 · 1:30–1:55 PM CEST InterContinental Barcelona
About this session
Most efforts to improve recruitment and retention work within the boundaries of the trial as currently designed: better outreach, better tracking, better engagement tools layered onto processes that haven't fundamentally changed in decades. In this fireside chat, Sir Martin Landray — architect of the RECOVERY trial, which went from no protocol to first patient in nine days and enrolled 50,000 participants — challenges that premise. Drawing on his experience building trials that are radically faster, larger, and simpler for the people in them, Landray argues that much of the recruitment and retention burden the industry spends so much effort managing is a symptom of outdated trial design, not a problem to be solved through more sophisticated engagement. This candid conversation explores what recruitment and retention could look like if trials asked less of patients to begin with — and what it would take for the industry to stop rewarding activity and start rewarding results.
