Real World Use of eSource in Clinical Research Data Transfers Using HL7 FHIR Standards
Mon, Sep 29, 2025 · 3:05–4:05 PM EDT Room 341+342, Baltimore Convention Center
About this session
Session chaired by Michael Buckley
Description:
The transition from traditional to modern data collection has spawned an entire new ecosystem of approaches and vendors, creating a complex web of considerations that leave many stakeholders unsure of where to start.
A study from the Society of Clinical Data Management (SCDM) eSource Implementation Consortium, published in Contemporary Clinical Trials Communications in November 2024, found there were 36 steps sites needed to traverse before they could even get started with eSource – all of which were associated with their own challenges.1
Scalable implementation relies on the industry coming together to overcome these barriers. To this end, SCDM hosted a series of workshops and meetings in 2024, bringing leading subject matter experts from across the clinical research ecosystem together to share their knowledge, insights, and case studies. The initiative included three working groups, which focused on site readiness, contract readiness, and technological readiness, as well as a roundtable, during which they discussed the working groups’ findings, the challenges and, crucially, the potential solutions of eSource implementation.
This panel will summarize a range of in production best practice recommendations that are scaling in real world PI/II/III clinical trials. Attendees will gain actionable insights and connections to key site, pharma, and regulatory subject matter experts that will act as a foundation for the wider-scale adoption of eSource clinical trial data collection and transfer across the industry. The real-world best practice recommendations currently in production at sites and pharma set out in this panel will help with wider-scale eSource adoption, and further leverage the use of HL7 FHIR data standards for these transfers.
